Best Sloan Innovation Period (SIP) Classes Ever: Spring 2010

March 17

This week, Sloan does not hold regular classes.  It is like a week of ‘training’ at work, where you refresh and gain some new skills to use in your day job (as a student).  I explained SIP more in my Fall SIP post.

My two classes Monday may have been the best two SIP classes ever.

———————————————————————————————

First, I spent the morning with eleven of my LGO classmates doing improv (think Who’s Line is it Anyway?).  We had a host, Brad, from the nearby Kitch in Sync Improv comedy group who taught us what to do and led us through increasingly funny activities together.  This taught us listening, quick thinking and communication skills that are really applicable to business.

Some of my personal favorite highlights:

Liron explaining to Kevin what it would be like if she had children, and how ‘sparkly’ is her favorite color

Catherine and I riding ostriches in a haunted house

Chris and Christie auditioning to be the girl on the Chiquita Banana sticker

Barry and Steve H. rock climbing the door

and…

when I worked in the line “maybe he hired Asvin as his life coach” (inside joke)

and good skits with topics of lingerie shopping and fire fighting.

A great morning of improv fun with a dozen of my LGO classmates!!

This was just the morning!  If you noticed above, I was wearing clothes like I was about to go to the gym…because I was!  Instead of sitting in a classroom all day like some SIP classes, my afternoon was at the z-center (MIT recreational facility).  Next up, an afternoon of climbing and ropes, and mental challenges!

The idea is like several previous LGO or Sloan events at Outward Bound, Leadership Reaction Course, and the Warren Center, where you are doing a challenge that involves teamwork and various physical and mental challenges.  After most tasks, we debriefed and talked about teamwork and leadership.

One of the early activities was where each of two teams had an A-frame made out of wood.  The objective was to have one person stand inside the A-frame holding a frisbee of tennis balls while her teammates ‘walked’ the frame across the track about 20 feet using only ropes and physics.  Then, the person inside threw the balls to a person who had to catch them.  Points were acquired for catching and lost for dropping tennis balls.

I was the person in the A-frame, and there was another person on the back of the frame with a rope and a person to catch balls on the far side, but you can’t see them in this picture.

Here is the group talking about the last activity.

Next, we moved to a gymnastics area that had a cargo net and rock climbing up a wall.

up I go…

We climbed up to this platform, then jumped on to this trapeze like bar.  This was admittedly scary.

I made it!

Here is my teammade, mid-air, jumping to the bar.

Next up was a rope climb to the ceiling

Way up high

Overall, the two SIP classes I had Monday were great!

Thanks to Jan for taking pictures in the morning and many various people in the afternoon session!

p.s. I have many more pictures from throughout the day.  If you were in the ropes class and want me to send them to you, let me know.  LGOs, I can send out a note for the other pictures.
