I recently came across a list of “101 Things To Do (readable link)” before I graduated from MIT.  While it is meant more for undergrads, let’s see how I did.

-

A few highlights and comments from my review:

1. I’m happy to say I didn’t pull an all-nighter.  It was hard at times but I worked to keep a strong balance and set boundaries.  One of them was going to bed at 12:30 which was often, but not always met.

2. I learned that the MooBella ice cream machine in the new Sloan building is made with liquid nitrogen by freezing the liquid on-demand.  Interestingly, this keeps operating expenses down because the ice cream is kept liquid and at room temperature decreasing transportation and cold storage costs.  But, oh, I haven’t tried it.

3. I did this at the E62 dedication (new Sloan building) with two Nobel Laureates.

10.  Play an intramural sport - soccer, softball, ICE HOCKEY.

11. IAP - Can we say PLANT TREK!

13. MIT has a football team?

14. Play in the snow - how about the several feet that populated our grounds for months!

15. Drank bubble tea during a LGO summer team reunion

16. A quirky fact about MIT - undergrads must be able to swim one length of the pool to graduate.

26. Cape Cod is beautiful!

27.  Make way for ducklings

28. Many trips on the Freedom Trail with out-of-town friends.

29. Chowdah?

34. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts is free for MIT students, as are many other museums!

37. Candlepin, check.  I’m not even sure where to find regular bowling in Cambridge.

38.  Chris loves Border Cafe!

39.  We received a gift membership to NE Aquarium for last year, Chris and Nolan went often

41.  Fourth of July fireworks, awesome.  MIT 150th Anniversary fireworks, amazing!

42.  Go runners go!

46.  Visited the top of the Prudential building with the Sloan graduation celebrations

47.  Its quite easy to get a free lunch and dinner at Sloan, particularly in the fall recruiting season

49.  Dim Sum, yum!  Hei la Moon is delicious.

51.  Mike’s Pastry - part of the experience is waiting in a 15-20 minute line (preferably in the cold) and pushing up to the front

53.  Highly recommend taking courses outside your given major.. even if you already have two majors.

59 and 91.  MIT Medical had a sign up during the winter - I Hate This Flu Pandemic.  However, that isn’t the original meaning of IHTFP…

65.  Fenway is fun, makes visitors into instant Red Sox fans

66.  Barker Library (inside the MIT dome) was my favorite thesis writing location - but no napping - type type type!!

67.  I have had my picture taken with Tim the Beaver (by the way, what a great name TIM - MIT backwards) Oh, and the MIT President, Susan Hockfield!

69.  Spring Gala in mansion filled Newport, RI was a blast, and it was on our anniversary last year.

72.  Oh yeah, I will miss you food trucks.  Mexican Truck (Jose’s), Clover Truck, Falafel Truck, Asian Truck (changed names/new truck).  And, I will miss the Chinese in the food court.

74.  We were walking distance from the Cambridge Galleria, but not much shopping with no income…

75.  Summer is the best time in Boston!

79.  Visit another country?  This is an understatement for Sloanies!

80.  Legal Seafood - the place to get taken to by a company or people in town.

85.  Yes, the Blue Line on the T ends in Wonderland.  What’s there?

95.  We went to Bartley’s, but very disappointed.

96.  I’m Course X and Course 15!

98.  Quincy Market and Faneuil Hall - check out the lecture by the park rangers upstairs on in the Great Hall

99.  I gave myself credit for this one because I already knew how to do my own laundry.  However, I maybe should have subtracted one because Chris did most of the laundry as a stay-at-home dad.

100.  Auditing a class was great - I was over my credit limit and enjoyed just listening to Game Theory this spring.  Pass/Fail classes are nice too, takes off stress.

101.  Wait, I should get TWO points for this one!  I graduated with two degrees from MIT!

Total: A solid 50 of 101!

*This list is given out to undergrads when they start and it changes each year.  This one is a bit older, but many of the items are the same.
